In the serene Texas Hill Country town of Magnolia Bluff, coffee shop owner Harry Thurgood and his pastor wife Ember Cole return from a year-long voyage to face a storm of secrets and sin.

Four years and two thousand miles removed from his last investigation, retired Minneapolis homicide detective Ray Schiller is involuntarily dragged into another murder case.

Ray is visiting his newlywed daughter, Krista, in Texas Hill Country when, back-to-back, a man and woman die under suspicious circumstances. An avalanche of motives and means points to illicit lovers, betrayed spouses, spiteful business rivals, and more.

In the quiet beauty of the Texas Hill Country, nothing stays buried forever. In the small town of Magnolia Bluff, neighbors know each other by name, doors are left unlocked, and the volunteer fire department is the town’s pride. But when a late-night blaze erupts on Sweet Gum Lane, that sense of security goes up in flames. The fire crew responds with practiced precision, pulling a terrified family from the inferno. Then a beloved firefighter makes one final push back inside to save the family dog. Moments later, the roof collapses.
